Shane McCooe

Shane McCooe, also know as Shane the Brave, is an eight year old Bergen County boy who is currently battling B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Shane was diagnosised on December 2, 2022, after 8 months of unknown bone marrow suppression. Shane treatment lasts for 2 1/2 years and involves many rounds of chemotherapy and procedures including 20 spinal taps. He was pulled out of school in kindergarten and missed all of first grade. Shane is receiving his treatment and care at the Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Shane is a kind and intelligent second grader who has a love of reading and a passion for sports. He is a huge NY Giants fan and roots for the Mets when he isn’t building legos or playing outside. He hopes to one day be a professional athlete.

Not only has Shane been fighting leukemia for 15 months, but he has suffered many severe side effects from his chemotherapy treatments.  One of the most severe being an extensive blood clot in his brain which required intensive care, blood thinners for 12 months, and physical therapy. Shane’s body has dealt with countless other side affects like mouth sores, pancreatitis, appendicitis, and more.

No matter how devastating and intense the treatments and side-effects have been, Shane has shown relentless bravery while holding a positive mindset. Shane is currently in his second phase of treatment and is optimistic and excited about reaching his end of treatment in 2025.
